Main Factors Affecting Gold Prices

The US dollar strengthened during yesterday’s European session, mainly influenced by policy signals from the US Treasury Secretary and expectations regarding US Treasury supply. The rise in the US dollar index during the European session increased the cost of gold priced in dollars, weakening buying interest at higher levels. Gold prices began to fluctuate and decline during the European session, reflecting the short-term strengthening of the dollar putting pressure on gold prices.

Although the market reduced short-term interest rate hike expectations due to Warsh’s remarks, it has not completely ruled out the possibility of a rate hike at the end of the year. Some Federal Reserve officials still believe that the decline in inflation has “not reached a reassuring level,” keeping the market cautious about policy direction. This uncertainty made buying conservative at higher levels, making it difficult for gold prices to break through above 4200 after a rebound.

US long-term bond yields remained high on Monday, with the market still concerned about fiscal deficits and long-term debt supply pressure, keeping yields high for both 10-year and 30-year bonds. High yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, making buyers reluctant to chase prices at higher levels. Gold prices encountered resistance after a short-term rebound, reflecting that the high yield environment remains an important factor limiting the rise in gold prices.

No major US data releases were scheduled for Tuesday, leading to a general reduction in directional bets in the early trading session. The market is awaiting US PMI data later this week, which will influence market expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates. Lacking macroeconomic catalysts, gold prices are primarily driven by technical factors and market sentiment in the short term, with buying favoring short-term trading, keeping prices within a narrow range recently.

Technical Analysis

Yesterday, gold opened at 4168 and fluctuated narrowly in the early session, reflecting some support in the market. Gold rose to 4190 during the Asian session but fell back during the European session due to a stronger dollar, ultimately closing at 4141, forming a weak candlestick with a long upper shadow and a short lower shadow. The chart shows that selling pressure at higher levels remains significant, and the short-term rebound lacks sustainability.

Yesterday’s closing price was slightly below the 20-day moving average of 4170, indicating that the short-term trend remains in a weak recovery phase. Only if gold prices can return above 4170-4190 can the short-term structure be expected to improve. The 50-day moving average is at 4321, and gold prices have been consistently below it, reflecting a continued weak medium-term trend. The significant distance between gold prices and the 50-day moving average suggests that a medium-term rebound requires further fundamental support.

The RSI is 43, a slight improvement from previous days, but still within the neutral-to-weak zone. A break above 50-55 would help gold prices challenge above 4200; conversely, a drop below 40 should raise concerns about a potential pullback after the rebound ends.

Trading Strategy

Yesterday, gold prices rebounded in the early session but fell back during the European session, reflecting a lack of buying support amid a strengthening dollar and high yields. Technically, gold prices remain below major moving averages, indicating a weak short-term and medium-term structure. Therefore, a more prudent approach today would be to primarily sell on rallies, supplemented by light buying at lower levels.

The first support zone is at 4120-4140, which is yesterday’s closing price and the extension of the low. If gold prices find support in this zone, a short-term rebound may occur. However, if this zone is broken, the next support zone is at 4060-4090, which is the lower edge of the previous consolidation zone and a key defensive position in the medium-term structure. If gold prices break below 4060, be wary of a possible acceleration of the decline.

The first resistance zone is at 4180-4200, which is the area that yesterday’s rebound failed to break through, and is also close to the first resistance level of the short-term rebound. If gold prices can break through this zone, the next resistance zone is at 4250-4280, which is the area where major moving averages are located and is a key position for whether the medium-term trend can be repaired. If gold prices encounter resistance in this zone, consider establishing a short-term sell order and trading in line with the weak consolidation pattern.

There is no important data today, making the market more inclined to wait and see. It is recommended to pay close attention to the US dollar index to better judge the short-term strength or weakness of gold prices.
